WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS FC - "WOLVES"

Although one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888, it was over 60 years before the Wolverhampton Wanderers really made their presence felt in League competition.

The 1893 and 1908 FA Cup winners spent most of their time in the second tier until Major Frank Buckley guided Wolves FC to the Division Two title in 1932, but it was the appointment of former player Stan Cullis as manager after the Second World War that made the difference.

He enjoyed an unrivalled period of success at Molineux, beginning with Wolves FC's FA Cup final win over Leicester in 1949 and following it up with three League titles - in 1954, 1958 and 1959 - and a further FA Cup triumph in 1960, the same year they were denied a third successive League Championship by a single point.

Cullis left in 1964 and it was not until Bill McGarry was appointed manager in 1968 that the glory days returned to Molineux.

After finishing fourth in the First Division in 1971, the Wanderers qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time and reached the final, only to lose 3-2 on aggregate to Tottenham.

However, it was not long before McGarry brought silverware to Wolves FC, a potent forward line of Derek Dougan and John Richards firing them to a League Cup victory over Manchester City in 1974.

Another League Cup triumph followed in 1980, when John Barnwell's team beat holders Nottingham Forest with a second-half goal from Andy Gray.

Instead of starting another golden era, though, this was a precursor to the worst period in Wolves FC's history as successive relegations between 1983 and 1986 saw Wolves land in the bottom tier for the first time.

However, a Fourth Division title success in 1988 began Wolves FC's big climb back to the top flight and the following year they won Division Three, setting a club record of 92 points in the process helped by 50 goals from club legend Steve Bull, including 37 in the League.

Wolverhampton Wanderers returned to the top flight for one season, 2003-04, after winning the play-off final against Sheffield United and, since entering the Championship, they have finished in the top 10 every season.
