TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FC - "SPURS"

League success has been hard to come by for Tottenham Hotspur FC over the past few decades and, despite being members of the Premier League since its inception in 1992, the North Londoners have failed to make any major impact.

Tottenham Hotspur have boasted some big-name managers and even bigger name football players down the years, but they have had to content themselves with a handful of domestic and European trophies since their last top-flight title success in 1961.

The arrival of ex-player Bill Nicholson as manager in 1958 sparked Spurs FC's most successful spell, as they won eight major football trophies in his 16-year reign.

The highlights came when Spurs FC became the first football club in the 20th century to achieve a League and Cup double, led by legendary skipper Danny Blanchflower in 1961, and the first British team to win a top European competition, in 1963, when they claimed the European Cup Winners' Cup.

Youngsters from Hotspur Cricket Club and the local grammar school formed Hotspur FC in 1882, only for the name to be changed to Tottenham Hotspur in 1884.

The football club turned professional in 1895 and joined the Southern League, moving from Northumberland Park to their present home, White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur became Southern League champions in 1900 and then, in 1901, they became the only non-League side to win the FA Cup since the formation of the Football League in 1888. The Spurs were elected to the Football League in 1908 and won promotion to Division One at the first attempt.

A new 'push and run' style of play, introduced by manager Arthur Rowe in 1949 and perfected with star names like Alf Ramsey and Nicholson in the football team, reaped its reward, with Tottenham Hotspur taking the Division One crown for the first time in 1951 and the runners-up spot in 1952.

Indeed, Tottenham have been a top-flight club ever since 1950 with one exception, the 1977-78 season.

Tottenham Hotspur have also built a reputation for star-studded teams, including players like Alan Mullery, Terry Venables and Joe Kinnear in the 1960s; Pat Jennings, Martin Chivers and Martin Peters in the 1970s; Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa, Steve Perryman and Glenn Hoddle in the 1980s; Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann in the 1990s.

Cup success characterised those years, with Tottenham Hotspur securing the last of their eight FA Cups in 1991, the last of their four League Cups in 2008 and a second UEFA Cup triumph in 1984.

Spurs squad

The truth is that Spurs have an excellent squad, and this season we've seen them begin to play for each other. Jermain Defoe's form is frightening at the moment, you just fancy him getting onto anything in he box and he is absolutely lethal. We see Aaron Lennon finally make true on the promise he has shown over the years. He is developing into a fantastic player, he has been working on his final ball into the box, taking on players more and we can see how his confidence has grown. I do think that they will miss Modric, he played a big role in the team and his presence is being missed.

I might be wrong but I definitely think They are a force to be reckoned with this season.

Tottenham V Arsenal

Just based on their respective last games, I'd actually put my money on Arsenal to win. 12 diferent goal scorers, and it seems almost every week another person from their long injury list returns. When they do return they look really hungry and make impact in the games. Tottenham who started well this season have begun to fade away, they need to find their rythm again without Modric who seemed to link Tottenhams play together.

Top Four Place?

I have been really impressed with Spurs start to this season. In pre-season I thought they looked really good in the Asia tournament. They had brilliant start to the Premiership but its seems to have been forgotten. If they are going to be successfull in getting into the top four they have to beat teams like Bolten. The mid table teams are were you need to get your points. Not to discredit Bolten but they have never been the most technical team in the Premiership. The tend to keep it very simple and straight forward and have never shyed away from knocking a long ball into the danger area to try to get results. That being said their interplay against Spurs was sublime. From midfield to forwards the passing and movement made it look like Spurs were standing still. If Spurs are struggling with mid table teams who can move well and disorganise them thy are definitely gonna struggle to beat or get points with teams who are higher up the table. I hope they step it up coz they have been laying some good football but a 2-2 draw with Bolten isn't good enough...

Last two games against Arsenal

In the last two games against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur drew 0:0 and then 4:4, so there is a chance that this time if they really go for it Spurs could win against them. What a coupt that would be. They did trample Arsenal in the Carling Cup 08 winning 5:1 so it can happen!

Can we make the top four in the 09-10 season?

Spurs have been playing better than ever this season but the real question is whether we can take that next step into the top four. Harry Rednap thought so before the Spurs vs Man U game on 12th Sept where Tottenham lost 3-1, but since then we have been looking strong and are currently residing in the last of the top four spots (1st Oct) but with some tough games coming up who know? What out for the Arsenal vs Tottenham on 31st Oct!
