SHEFFIELD UNITED FC - "THE BLADES"

You have to go a long way back for Sheffield United's glory days - in fact back to the 30 years betweem 1895 to 1925 when they won the League in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925.

Sheffield United has not won a major trophy since 1925, although the Blades did reach both domestic cup semi-finals and the First Division play-off final in the 2002-03 season, losing all three matches.

Sheffield United's worst period was between the 1975-76 and 1981-82 campaigns - three relegations in six seasons seeing the Blades plummet from the top flight to the Fourth Division.

The Blades were soon back on track, though, with manager Dave Bassett leading Sheffield United through successive promotions back into the top tier in time for the launch of the Premier League in 1992.

The Blades stayed up for one more season, but a 20th-place finish in 1993-94 saw the football club relegated and it was not until the end of the 2005-06 campaign that they earned promotion back into the Premiership. The success was short-lived, however, with Sheffield United returning to the Championship in 2007.

The football club was established in 1889 to keep members of Sheffield United Cricket Club, which had formed in 1854, together and make money from their Bramall Lane ground over the winter.

Three years later, when the Football League decided to introduce a Second Division, Sheffield United were awarded a place in it and they did not look back, winning promotion in their first season via a play-off and embarking on the most successful period in their history.
