NOTTINGHAM FOREST FC - "FOREST" OR "THE REDS"

If Brian Clough made his name in English football at Derby County, it was at fierce rivals Nottingham Forest FC where he conquered Europe.

He arrived at the City Ground in 1975 to be followed in 1976 by his faithful assistant, Peter Taylor, and it was not long before the pair who masterminded the dramatic change in Derby's fortunes were weaving their magic in Nottingham.

Nottingham Forest FC won promotion to the First Division in 1977 and the football club was further strengthened by Kenny Burns and Peter Shilton joining key players such as Viv Anderson, Martin O'Neill, Trevor Francis and Archie Gemmill.

Between 1978 and 1980 Nottingham Football Club went on to dominate English and European football, with the football club winning the League Cup and the European Cup twice, the European Super Cup and the Football League title.

After Taylor's departure in 1980, Nottingham Forest's honours continued, with League Cup wins in 1989 and 1990, but Clough's retirement in May 1993, when the football club was relegated, marked the end of an incredible period of success.

Since then, Notts County FC have suffered a bumpy ride on and off the pitch, with two spells in the Premier League mixed with financial problems and a short period in League One.

It was typical of the colourful history of the football club which was formed after a group of shinty players met in 1865 and agreed to switch games to football. The first match was played in 1866 against local side Notts County FC and Nottingham Forest FC was born the following year.

Nottingham Forest was elected to the Football League's Division One in 1892 and six years later won their first major trophy (the 1898 FA Cup), and apart from a season in the second tier, the football club stayed in the top flight until 1911.

After the Second World War the Reds suffered their first spell in the Third Division (1949 to 1951) but Nottingham Forest FC finally made a breakthrough in 1957 when the football club regained top-flight status for a lengthy stay and another FA Cup win followed in 1959.

Nottingham Football Club was a runner-up and League Cup semi-finalists in 1967, but a slide into relegation followed in 1972 - until Clough's arrival changed everything.
