LEICESTER CITY FC - "THE FOXES"

Leicester City's major claim to fame has been their success in the League Cup, which they have won three times so far.

While Leicester City have yet to crack the FA Cup, where they have been runners-up four times, its young partner has proved a happy hunting ground for the Foxes with victories in 1964, 1997 and 2000.

Leicester City FC's origins lie in Leicester Fosse FC, which was founded in 1884 but wound up after the First World War and replaced in 1919 by Leicester City, who were elected to Division Two.

City went on to play in the top two tiers of English football until 2008, when they were relegated to League One.

The Foxes' longest spell in the top flight was from 1957 to 1969, but although Matt Gillies' men took part in five cup finals, the only silverware they won was the League Cup.

Relegated in 1969, Leicester City bounced back in 1971 to take the Division Two title, enjoying a 17-match unbeaten run in the League, with England international Peter Shilton in goal.

Seven years later Leicester City FC went down again and they see-sawed back and forth between the top two football divisions, until Martin O'Neill steered the side back into the top flight in 1996, Steve Claridge sinking Crystal Palace in the dying seconds of the play-off final.

The following season saw Leicester City win their first major football trophy since the 1960s, Claridge proving the hero again with the winner in the League Cup final replay victory over Middlesbrough after the first match ended 1-1.

Three years later, after losing the 1999 final to Tottenham, Leicester City repeated their League Cup success, this time beating Tranmere Rovers 2-1 in the final, and achieved their highest-ever Premier League placing so far of eighth.

However, the Foxes' fortunes declined following O'Neill's departure, with relegation from the top flight in 2002.

Despite entering administration at the start of the 2002-03 campaign, Leicester City finished runners-up with 92 points and under Micky Adams won promotion to the Premier League.

The joy was short-lived, however, Leicester FC slipping into the Championship for a four-year spell the following campaign and then dropping into the third tier for the first time in 2008.
