YEOVIL TOWN FC - "THE GLOVERS"

Yeovil Town may have spent most of their long history outside the Football League, having only competed there since 2003, but within two seasons of arriving, the West Country side became the champions of League Two.

With Gary Johnson in charge, Yeovil football reached the promised land by winning the Conference by a record 17-point margin, losing only three matches, being unbeaten at Huish Park and scoring 100 goals.

Johnson was still in charge when, two years later, Yeovil football did the unthinkable and finished top of League Two. The Glovers' promotion dreams became a reality after they garnered 83 points.
Another two years later and Yeovil Town Football Club came within a whisker of promotion to the Championship in only their fourth season in the Football League. After qualifying for the play-offs, Russell Slade's side lost 2-0 to Blackpool in the final.

Prior to this period Yeovil football style had made their name as the most successful non-League team in the FA Cup, their most famous victory coming in 1949 when they knocked Sunderland on the way to the fifth round, the best run in their history.

Yeovil Town were no strangers to championships, though, having picked up 13 non-Football League titles since 1922.

Yeovil Town started life in 1890 as Yeovil FC, changing their name twice before merging in 1915 with another side to become Yeovil & Petters United.
In 1979 the Glovers became founder members of the Alliance Premier League, launching a 24-year period that saw them move between that League later renamed the Conference– and the Isthmian League Premier Division.

It was the appointment of Johnson as boss in 2001 that was the launchpad for Yeovil football rise to the League, with their first FA Trophy a year later being the prelude to greater honours.
