WALSALL FC - "THE SADDLERS"

Walsall FC have a long history, having been a founder member of Division Two in 1892 after being formed four years earlier, but it has been far from glorious.

Indeed, for their highest League position you have to go way back to 1899, when the Saddlers finished sixth in Division Two.

Their most memorable moments came in the 1983-84 League Cup, when Alan Buckley's men beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury and drew with Liverpool in the semi-finals, although the latter went on to beat the Saddlers 2-0 in the return leg at Fellows Park.

When the League system was reorganised in 1958, the Saddlers were placed in the bottom tier, but the following season they won the Division Four title.

They went up again in 1961 as runners-up, their first time in Division Two since 1901, but after their relegation in 1963, the Saddlers did not return to the second tier until 1988, when Tommy Coakley guided them through the play-offs.

Yet again, though, Walsall FC could not sustain
that form and successive relegations landed them back in Division Four by 1990, where they remained for five years.

The Saddlers returned to the third tier in 1995 as Division Three runners-up and surprised everyone in 1999 when they came second in Division Two under Ray Graydon.

After yo-yoing between the second and third tiers, 2006 saw the Saddlers drop back into League Two, but the West Midlands side regained their League One place in 2007, Richard Money leading them to the League Two title with a club record 89 points.
