SWINDON TOWN FC - "THE ROBINS"

Two periods stand out in Swindon Town's history their stunning League Cup success in 1969 and their surprise season in the Premiership in 1993-94.

Swindon Town, then a Third Division club, were not given a chance at Wembley when they came up against London giants Arsenal, but two extra-time goals from master winger Don Rogers sealed a 3-1 success and their only major silverware after the sides had been locked at 1-1 on 90 minutes.

Then, in 1993, former England midfielder Glenn Hoddle steered his side into the Division One play-offs, where Swindon Town clinched promotion to the Premier League after a thrilling 4-3 win over Leicester City.

However, the Robins' time in the top flight was brief. Swindon Town FC were relegated after winning only five games and two years later they were back in Division Two.

The 1995-96 season saw them bounce back into Division One, though, after winning the Division Two title. Under Steve McMahon, Swindon Town earned 92 points, losing only four games that season and going unbeaten in their final 12 games.

Since 2000 Swindon Town, who were set up in 1879, have spent eight seasons in the third tier which is where they started as one of the founder members of the Division Three South in 1920.

Swindon town FC remained at that level until being placed in Division Three in 1958, but in 1982 they dropped into the bottom division of English football for the first time.

However, the 1985-86 campaign marked a turning point for the Swindon Town, with Lou Macari's side setting a Football League record of 102 points when they won the Division Four title and then achieving back-to-back promotions the next year, this time via the play-offs.

Former Argentine international Ossie Ardiles took over the helm in 1989, leading his side to promotion to Division One after beating Sunderland in the play-offs, but all the hard work was to no avail as the club were relegated to Division Three for making illegal payments. After appealing, Swindon Town FC were allowed to stay in Division Two.
