PETERBOROUGH UNITED FC - "THE POSH"

Apart from two seasons in the second tier of English football in the early 1990s, Peterborough United have largely been a fixture in the two lower leagues since being elected to the Football League in 1960.

Formed in 1934 to fill the gap left by the demise two years earlier of Peterborough FC and Fletton United, Posh played in the Midland League until their election and they more than justified that decision by romping to the Fourth Division title in their first season in the League, with Terry Bly scoring a League record 52 goals.

The Posh spent seven seasons in the Third Division, reaching the semi-finals of the Football League Cup in 1966, before being relegated to Division Four in 1968 after being placed bottom of Division Three because of financial irregularities.

Noel Cantwell guided Peterborough United back into Division Three in 1974 thanks to an unbeaten home record, but they returned to the bottom division in 1979.

The appointment of ex-player Chris Turner as manager in 1991 marked a change in fortunes as Peterborough united FC achieved back-to-back promotions in 1991 and 1992, the latter qualifying them for their first campaign in the second tier and coming thanks to a Ken Charlery double in a 2-1 play-off final victory over Stockport at Wembley.

By 1997, though, Peterborough United were back at the bottom of the Football League ladder and they stayed there until Barry Fry now director of football at the club - led the Posh to Division Two via the play-offs in 2000, with Andy Clarke grabbing the only goal in a 1-0 defeat of Darlington 1-0.

Five years later Peterborough United were relegated again, but Darren Ferguson showed he had inherited some of his famous father's managerial qualities by guiding Peterborough back to League One after finishing in the runners-up spot in 2008.
