IPSWICH TOWN FC - "TRACTOR BOYS"

Ipswich Town Football Club will for ever be known as the football club where two of the foremost managers in the history of English football - Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson - cut their managerial teeth.

Ramsey's arrival in 1955 helped Suffolk's only professional football club rocket up the League ladder, from the Third Division South to League champions at the first attempt in 1962, which qualified Ipswich Town for the European Cup for the first time.

Not surprisingly, Ipswich Town FC lost Ramsey in 1963 to take charge of the England football team and the football club's fortunes took a downturn, with relegation in 1964, when the side conceded 121 League goals in 42 games.

Four years later, however, the Tractor Boys were back at the top after Bill McGarry led them to promotion and when he left for Wolves in 1968, Robson joined and, following a tricky start, steered Ipswich Town to more glory.

Ipswich Town FC won the Texaco Cup in 1973 and five years later claimed the FA Cup in their centenary year, before the football club landed the UEFA Cup in 1981 following the signings of inspirational Dutch duo Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen.

However, in 1982 the Football Association came calling to Portman Road again, Robson left to manage England and in 1986 Ipswich Town were relegated.

Ipswich Town have since spent their time bouncing between the top two divisions, with the football club in and out of the top flight twice.

It is a far cry from Ipswich Town FC's early years, as they were an amateur football club until 1936, were not elected to the Football League until 1938 and did not climb into the second tier until 1954.
