FA CUP WINNERS - EVERTON

Everton's five triumphs as FA Cup winners mask the fact that they have lost in the domestic showpiece on seven occasions, including three times during their 1980’s heyday.

Everton’s last success, though, was extra special. Few pundits gave Joe Royle's Toffees much chance in the 1995 FA Cup final, but striker Paul Rideout's header stunned a Manchester United team appearing in the second of three consecutive finals.

Everton's 1933 triumph as FA Cup winners, over Manchester City, was notable because the players wore numbered shirts for the first time (oddly, though, from 1 to 22). The legendary Dixie Dean was among the scorers.

Everton recovered from two goals down with less than half an hour to play in the 1966 final to become 3-2 FA Cup Winners against Sheffield Wednesday.

Under manager Howard Kendall Everton dominated English football in the mid-1980s and four times they reached the FA Cup final, only to lose three of them.

The sole success was in 1984, though they needed a controversial Andy Gray goal headed out of Watford goalkeeper Steve Sherwood's hands to secure a 2-0 victory.

Everton returned to Wembley the following year but were unable to overcome a Manchester United side depleted by the dismissal of defender Kevin Moran. United's Norman Whiteside broke clear in extra time to curl in a glorious FA Cup winner.

Over the next four years Everton managed to lose twice to local rivals Liverpool. An Ian Rush double secured a 3-1 victory in the 1986 final. Later in the 1989 final, the Welshman hit two more which Liverpool won 3-2 (after extra time) to become FA Cup Winners in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster.
