CRYSTAL PALACE FC - "THE EAGLES"

Founded in 1905 by workers from the world-famous Crystal Palace, Crystal Palace Football Club entered Southern League Division Two and, despite losing their first match, the Glaziers - as they were then known - remained undefeated in the 1905-06 season and finished as champions.

When organised matches resumed after the First World War, Crystal Palace FC won the inaugural Division Three title in 1921 and therefore were promoted to Division Two.

Crystal Palace moved to a purpose-built stadium, Selhurst Park, in 1924 but the following year were relegated to Division Three South.

Crystal Palace's fortunes took a downturn after the Second World War, with relegation coming in 1958 to the newly-formed Division Four.

The 1960s, however, were more successful for Crystal Palace FC, who achieved steady promotions, ending up in the top flight for the first time in 1969.

The football club became known as The Eagles in 1973 after a change of crest, but the new nickname coincided with relegation into Division Two.

That was immediately followed by a slide into Division Three, from where Crystal Palace escaped in 1977 under the inspirational management of Terry Venables, who then guided them to the Division Two title two years later.

Crystal Palace's first season back in the top flight saw Palace reach their highest league position, topping the table on September 29, 1979.

Most of the 1980s were spent in Division Two until Steve Coppell won promotion back to the elite in 1989, but it was the following year that saw the Crystal Palace hit new heights when they became runners-up in the FA Cup - taking Manchester United to a replay before losing 1-0.

Crystal Palace finished third in the top flight in 1991 - their highest league finish - and beat Everton to take the Zenith Data Systems Cup.

Crystal Palace Football Club were inaugural members of the Premier League, but went down again, spending the remainder of the 1990s and early 2000s see-sawing between the two levels, winning the Division One title in 1993-94, until entering the Championship in 2005.
