Barnsley FC was founded in 1887 as Barnsley St Peter's. They joined the Football League in 1898 and struggled in Division Two for the first 10 years, partly because of financial problems.
In 1919 the Tykes reached the FA Cup Final, losing out to Newcastle in a replay. However, Barnsley went on to win the FA Cup in 1912, defeating West Brom 1-0 in a replay to win the trophy for the first and only time.
After the First World War, Barnsley FC spent most of the next eight decades in the Second Division, with spells in both the Third and even Fourth Divisions.
The Tykes got back on track in the 1980s and early 1990s, finally breaking into the top flight in 1996 for the first time, but the spell was short-lived, lasting for one season only.
Beset by financial difficulties, the Barnsley Football Club went into administration in 2002 and were relegated to the old Division Two the same year, but it was saved from extinction after being purchased by the town's mayor.
The Tykes have been hampered in recent years by a rapid turnover of managers, but the football club gained promotion to the Championship in 2006, when Barnsley FC beat Swansea City 4-3 on penalties in the play-off final, and have been there since.
The highlight for the Tykes in recent years has been the 2007-08 season, when Barnsley Football Club reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 1912, beating Premiership giants Liverpool and defending champions Chelsea FC, before losing 1-0 to Championship rivals Cardiff City at Wembley.

Barnsley quality
6 October 2009 - 8:54am — Steve GerrardBarnsley are fully capable of producing great football. They pushed hard in the match against Ipswich and got the result. More of that will see them climb into the top half of the Table. Mark Robins is right to be happy with that win. Barnsley did well, kept their heads up forced the game and the errors came, sometimes that is all the difference in a football game.

New Goalie for Tykes
1 October 2009 - 2:58pm — no1StokeFanSo the Tykes have signed a new goalie Bartosz Bialkowski from Southampton after both goalies are out on injury, David Preece (ankle) and Luke Steele (broken finger). I wonder how this will play out for Barnsley, they really need to get out of the danger zone.
